Company Team Building That’s Actually Fun

Company Team Building That’s Actually Fun

It’s no secret that team building activities often have a reputation for being stiff and predictable, or worse, for causing anxiety among employees to the point where they might not attend at all. But when designed with creativity and purpose, corporate team building can spark genuine joy, and be transformative.

Discover strategies to turn team building from a dreaded event into an experience your colleagues actually look forward to.

What makes team building effective and genuinely fun?

Anyone can organise a pizza lunch or a ‘trust activity’, but these aren’t especially memorable or effective across a longer time span. The secret to engaging team building lies in thoughtful planning that takes into account the group’s dynamics and goals of your team.

Fun team building is about much more than games and immediate rewards - it provides a shared learning experience where traditional workplace formalities and information silos are broken down to allow for a more open, rapid, direct and collaborative way of working to achieve the team’s given goals. It creates an environment, where everyone’s ideas and (new) personalities can shine, no matter the level and connections are made outside normal working interactions.

Consider these elements when planning your next team event:

  •  Activity-skill focus: consider first if there are any aspects especially important to further foster in your team - e.g. are you trying to stimulate creative thinking for new business ideas, or perhaps develop strategic thinking, or maybe it’s more about a physical energiser for the team. Knowing the skill / behavioural aspect will help you to narrow down on the right format for the occasion across the myriad of ‘team building’ activities such as escape rooms, treasure hunts, volunteer projects, and cooking workshops, etc.

  • Meaningful interactions: create or ensure with your facilitation partner ample opportunities and space in the event for authentic conversation and collaboration, not just gaming or competition, which on its own could risk tiring your team.

  •  Inclusive design: make sure activities accommodate different personalities, physical abilities, and comfort levels, allowing everyone to participate fully.

  • Real-World Relevance: incorporate exercises that mirror workplace challenges or enhance specific skills, such as activity planning with constraints, communication, innovation or problem-solving.

By choosing activities with these qualities, team members not only have fun but also develop their skills, form stronger working relationships and experience new meaningful connections

How to Implement Fun, Impactful Team Building

It’s easy to fall back on the same old activities, but lasting results come from a thoughtful and tailored approach. Start by surveying your team for their interests and preferences - this itself builds excitement and investment. Collaborate with professional facilitators, or engage volunteers within your company who are passionate about group activities.

Schedule events (partially) during work hours to show employees you value their work-life balance - forced ‘fun’ after hours can have the opposite of the intended effect and risks excluding some team members who have ‘at home’ responsibilities such as children to get back for. It doesn’t need to be a whole day programme of course - even 2-3 hours can be enough to achieve the intended goal. Always debrief after each activity to gather insights and feedback for the next team activity. Over time, weave team building into your company’s culture so it feels organic, not forced.

Genuinely fun team building is possible with the right approach. By focusing on meaningful, inclusive, and thoughtfully designed experiences, you’ll foster a culture of collaboration, boost morale, and unlock your team’s full potential - proving that work and fun really can go hand in hand.
