Top Taco Spots in CDMX!

Planning a trip to Mexico? Then allocating at least a few days to discovering some of Mexico City’s (CDMX = Ciudad de México) best taco spots is a must! Not to mention its incredible markets, cultural attractions and nightlife (more on these in another post).
We’ve picked out some of our faves for you - informal and authentic places, that champion the true flavours of Mexico and some of its most cherished taco recipes!
Taqueria Orinoco
This is a great late night taco spot - buzzing and serving until the early hours! Originating in Monterrey, Orinoco brings modern northern flair to Mexico City’s taco scene. Famous for their beef tacos ‘Tacos de Res’, try also their Tacos de Chicarron’ (crispy pork rind) - tacos come served with house potatoes - crispy, soft on the inside, small smashed potatoes El Califa (not to be confused with another taqueria ‘El Califa de Leon’)
El Califa (not to be confused with another taqueria ‘El Califa de Leon’)
A high quality Mexican chain of contemporary taco restaurants.  A personal favourite here are the steak tacos (‘Tacos de Bistek’) - a thin large slab of steak over a large corn tortilla, served with fresh cilantro and onion and ‘salsa verde’. Simplicity at its best. While you’re here also try ‘Costra’ tacos - a tortilla served with a grilled melted cheese ‘crust’ on top, rolled with your filling of choice inside
El Huequito
Go here for their famous Tacos al Pastor - tender pork marinated in a blend of exotic spices and cooked on a vertical spit, is thinly sliced, topped with pineapple, onion, and fresh cilantro, offering a perfect balance of sweet and savoury
El Turix
Of course this list would be incomplete without including one of the best places for Cochinita Tacos - the theme for our workshop menu! This place has some of the best Cochinita - pork - tacos in CDMX. Pork marinated and slowly cooked in an achiote (annato - red seed paste), citrus and spiced mix, served with jewel like pink slithers of pickled onion and salsa roja. Aromatic, ‘nada picante’ (not spicy!) and utterly delicious
Playas de Sinaloa
Stop here for their fish tacos (‘Tacos al Pescado’) - battered fish tacos, served on a large flour tortilla with chipotle mayo, ‘pico de gallo’ (onion, tomato and jalapeño) and lashings of coriander. Doesn’t get much better than this: the flavours and texture of the crispy fresh fish with the pico de gallo on a soft tortilla with the creamy mayo are simply sublime!! Whilst the place itself is nothing special, you can also do a take out and enjoy them in the nearby Parque Mexico
