A trip to Mexico needs ample time built in for exploring its wonderful (and world leading!!) markets - each an attraction in its own right. No better places exist in which to soak up Mexico’s food culture, exciting ingredients, and its fantastic array of arts and crafts, and household goods. The best advice we can give is pack an empty suitcase so you can explore and shop galore, at great prices too. (Check out the foldable Patagonia bags that condense into a small bounty.)

Mexico City has distinct markets for all kinds of things - whether it be sampling its incredible street food, or shopping for ingredients, arts and crafts, or exploring household and vintage finds

Mercado de San Juan

Great food market with a whole range of speciality / exotic ingredients - from chillies and moles, to dried insects, and mezcals - a great place to discover and take home some of Mexico's most distinguished ingredients

Mercado Merced

Mexico City’s largest retail food market, in the city centre. Similar to San Juan in terms of food / ingredients on offer, only larger. It also has a large outside section dedicated to household / kitchen goods, where you can pick up great ‘peltre’ (enamel kitchen ware) and other Mexican cookware and practical items

Tianguis de los Martes Polanco / Tianguis de los Sábados Parque Lincoln

Great street food market open on Tuesdays and Saturdays in different locations in Mexico City’s Polanco district. Perfect place for lunch - go very hungry: you can find here a whole host of exciting street food and ‘masa’ (corn dough) formats from tacos, gorditas, quesadillas, tlacoyos and more! We particularly love the ‘Gordita el Chicharron’ - a large fried gordita (corn pouch) filled with chicharron (crispy pork), onion, cilantro, salsa verde and a dash of ‘crema’ (cream) - incredible! The tlacoyos are also great to try here - oval shaped, and often blue masa, filled with (black) beans or fava / broad beans and typically topped with cheese, salsa, onion and cilantro

Mercado de artesanías de la Ciudadela

Mexico’s largest market for 'artesanias' - handmade arts and crafts. Here you can find a whole array of colourful and vibrant, beautifully made homeware - such as linen, cushion covers, serving- and table-ware  - as well as toys and other delights. You can also find excellent quality ‘molcajettes’ (large pestle and mortars perfect for handmade sauces and guacamole) made the traditional way with volcanic ash. We could, and do spend :), hours wandering the markets joyful alleys

Tianguis La Lagunilla

Mexico City’s largest flea market where you can find a fab array of vintage items - such as antiques, furniture, decor, other household items and clothes
